In 1890, William James studied neuroplasticity, the science
of how positive thoughts affect the brain. Peers rejected his claims that mere
thoughts could change the brain’s structure, but now many scientists accept it
as true. A more recent study indicates self-affirmations may help people in
low-power positions feel more confident under pressure. Lead researcher Sonia
Kang said: “Anytime you have low expectations for your performance, you tend to
sink down and meet those low expectations. Self-affirmation is a way to
neutralize that threat.”
